GDOT is shifting resources to the "wedge" area east of Atlanta as crews brace for a major refreeze Sunday night.

Wind, rain, freeze and more rain impact Cobb County amid a strong winter storm. A round of Sunday rain has melted some of the ice, although a significant ice coating remains. Gusty winds and widespread freezes have brought significant power outages. 

Weather alerts and warnings remain in effect for metro Atlanta and North Georgia as freezing rain continues through the afternoon. Forecasters warn another arctic blast is expected this evening, which could worsen icy conditions and prolong impacts under the ongoing Ice Storm Warning through Monday morning.

Officials are working to remove a tree from a roadway more than 6 hours after it originally fell due to an ice storm.

Here’s the latest update from South Henry County as conditions improve late this morning. After heavy rain around 4:30 a.m., the rain has moved out as of 11:40 a.m., leaving roads wet but largely clear. There are no reported traffic issues or accidents at this time, and traffic volume remains light. While plants and vegetation are frozen from earlier icy conditions, streets are passable and interstates remain unaffected. 

In White County, roughly one in three residents is without power as icy conditions continue to impact the area. We spoke with Deputy Director Don Strength, Emergency Management Division chief, who says no injuries have been reported so far. Firefighters and police have responded to calls involving downed trees hitting power lines, some sparking fires. Major roads remain mostly passable, but many secondary roads are impassable. Officials say crews are actively working and urge residents to stay in place and stay off the roads.

New weather alerts and warnings remain in effect for metro Atlanta and North Georgia as hazardous winter conditions continue into the late morning. The National Weather Service says an Ice Storm Warning is still in place for much of the region through late morning, with freezing rain creating dangerous travel conditions and the potential for power outages. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, and residents should prepare for slick roads, downed trees, and possible outages as conditions evolve through the 11:30 a.m. hour on 01/25/26.

Gwinnett County is expected to be one of the hardest hit metro Atlanta counties when it comes to ice totals. So far, no major travel impacts have been reported in the county. 

Ice is accumulating in Hall County where its still raining. FOX 5's Rey Llerena says the roads have a solid sheet on them, but he's seen some drivers still out, but moving slow. 

FOX 5 viewers are sending in pictures and video of the ice in their neighborhood. 

Fire crews were able to move a fallen tree in southwest Atlanta. The crew said the tree also pulled down phone and internet lines. 

Georgia Power has mobilized a massive response to this winter storm, deploying more than 10,000 personnel to North Georgia to tackle widespread power outages caused by significant ice accumulation. The utility company has implemented a "tried and true" multi-phase restoration process that prioritizes safety and infrastructure repairs. Spokespersons are urging customers to stay far away from downed lines and report any hazards immediately through the official mobile app or website.

Calhoun is currently in a "pocket of warmer air" with light rain at 34°F. While temperatures remain above freezing, significant wind gusts and 110,000 gallons of brine treatment are being managed by GDOT crews as they prepare for an expected drop in temperature. Standing water in areas like the local Buc-ee's parking lot poses a major refreeze risk for the Monday morning commute.
