Atlanta Police say they still can make arrests for marijuana possession
ATLANTA - Atlanta Police officers said a new marijuana measure approved by the City Council will not keep them from making arrests.
On Monday, the Atlanta City Council approved a bill that would allow an officer to hand out a citation with just a small fine for marijuana possession.
But officials said the consequences will still be served at the officer's discretion.
Police officers warn there is a state law that remains in effect and the notion that Council can decriminalize the drug is incorrect.
The new city council ordinance gives officer's discretion to give what is called a copy of charges instead of placing you in handcuffs.
