Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

ATLANTA (FOX 5 Atlanta) - Thursday marked 51 years since the assassination of arguably one of the most prolific figures in advocating civil right and non-violence.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on the evening of 1968. He was only 39 years old.

Thursday evening, the Atlanta community came together to remember the life and legacy of Dr. King at Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.

It was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the crypt of Dr. King.

King spearheaded the civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination.

He is the only non-president to have a national holiday dedicated in his honor.
