It's now been 40 years since an agreement between the United States and China normalized diplomatic relations.

This was one of the major foreign policy accomplishments of Jimmy Carter's presidency.

The former president spoke during a symposium marking the anniversary at the Carter Center Friday.

President Carter touched on current US-China relations saying he recommends President Trump and the Chinese president to find a small group of experts whose goal is to establish an understanding between our two countries while avoiding conflict.

Carter says he used this same approach in the 1970s to improve relations with Japan.
