Police corporal on leave after death of his police K9

The Conyers Police Department has placed a corporal on administrative leave after the death of his police K9.

In a news release, Conyers Police said they found the dog’s body in his handler’s patrol car outside his residence in Rockdale County Thursday evening at around 5 p.m.

Zane, a five year old bloodhound, had worked as a tracking dog for Conyers Police for four years, three of those with his current handler, Corporal Jerahmy Williams.

Williams has been with the Conyers Police Department for nearly five years and is a patrol Corporal.

Williams is currently on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

Rockdale County deputies responded to Corporal Williams’ residence Thursday night.

The Sheriff’s office is currently conducting a separate investigation with the assistance of the Rockdale County District Attorney’s Office.

In the news release, Conyers Police Chief Gene Wilson said, “We are committed to the care and proper treatment of our working K9s.  We are mourning the loss of our own.”
