Paul Broun targets GOP Rep. Doug Collins in comeback bid
ATLANTA (AP) — Former Georgia congressman Paul Broun is running to return to Washington by targeting fellow Republican Rep. Doug Collins.
Broun signed up Thursday to challenge Collins of Gainesville in the GOP primary for northeast Georgia's 9th District seat. An Athens physician, Broun left congress in 2014 to run unsuccessfully for the Senate.
In an email to supporters, Broun says: "Many might think I'm crazy to run for Congress again, but I am running because our nation deserves better than our current leaders."
Broun decided against trying to reclaim his old 10th District seat. It's now held by Rep. Jody Hice, a minister popular with Christian conservatives who are also important to Broun.
Broun, who served four terms in Congress, famously denounced evolution as a lie "straight from the pit of hell."
