A Minnesota boy is making headlines for spending his own birthday giving a generous donation to his local police department over the weekend.

The 9-year-old told his family he wanted cash this year for his birthday, but it wasn’t for his own pleasure. The fourth grader collected the money and hand delivered a check to the Saint Paul Police Department to help pay for bullet-proof vests for K9 officers.

“I think it’s outstanding that a 9-year-old could think of something like that’ it’s pretty special,” said Sgt. John Linssen with St. Paul Police. “A vest on a dog is very similar to a vest on a police officer. It covers their body. It protects them from bullets but also protects them from being stabbed.”

The check was written for $1,290.
