Henry County closes dog parks

Several Henry County neighborhoods have been placed on a 45-day quarantine after the county's fifth reported case of rabies this year.

Signs have been going up in Stockbridge near Old Atlanta Road and Davis Road. FOX 5 has learned that impacts about 1,500 homes.

Rabies control officers say it started when three dogs attacked and killed a raccoon that tested positive for rabies.

But that's not the only thing animal owners have to worry about.

A spike in canine influenza has forced animal control to shut down all dog parks in the county as well. While some dog owners called it an extreme measure, some veterinarians recommended pet owners currently avoid places where pets mingle, like dog parks and kennels.

Animal control officials in Henry County said they will reopen the dog parks if there are no reported cases in the next month.
