A major fuel foul-up could leave hundreds of motorists stranded.

Representatives for the company Green Oil confirmed to FOX 5 News it accidentally filled up unleaded gas pumps with diesel fuel.

This happened over the weekend at the Greenway BP on U.S. Highway 29 South in Newnan.

The manager of Green Oil issued the following statement:

"Our customers are very important to us, and we are working quickly to get this resolved. We are doing everything humanly possible to correct this error resolve this situation"

Putting diesel in a gas engine can jam the engine's fuel injectors and cause major damage to the system.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture strongly encourages consumers to always keep their receipt when purchasing gasoline.

The receipt is vital documentation when seeking compensation from gas stations.

Any motorists with issues should call the fuel and measure division at 1-800-282-5852.
