ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a former University of Georgia associate registrar has been arrested on dozens of felony theft counts for allegedly embezzling funds from a statewide professional association.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/2h9cS7L ) 45-year-old Melody Kesler was arrested Saturday on 56 counts of felony theft.

Police say the arrest stemmed from a Nov. 10 complaint by the executive board of the Georgia Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers that Kesler, the group's treasurer, was spending money from the association's checking account without authorization.

A police reports obtained by the newspaper says the association submitted banking statements to corroborate the allegation and a criminal investigation was launched.

Kesler surrendered early Saturday at the Clarke County Jail and was released on bond.
