An East Point firefighter is being called a hero and trendsetter in rescuing animals in the city. The firefighter rescued two dogs from a blaze and gave a dog CPR on Wednesday.

Firefighter Gerrell Lilly noticed one of the dogs he pulled from the burning East Point home was not breathing and unconscious. Officials said he immediately sprang into action and performed a few cycles of CPR on the lifeless dog.

Officials said that both dogs are now happily back in the loving arms of their owner.

The fire department is not trained for animal CPR and so officials said this was a first.
