Drive-by Shooting Leaves Teen Dead, Man Injured

A teenager was killed and a man was seriously injured in a drive-by shooting near South DeKalb Mall Wednesday night.

Detectives said the male victims were walking down Ember Drive around 9:20 p.m. when a white car pulled up and someone started shooting at them.  Both victims were shot several times. Officers found them lying along the side of the street.

Jaylon Maddox, 15, was rushed to Grady Memory Hospital, but did not survive. His adult friend, Justin Sellers, 27, is still being treated and is listed in critical but stable condition.

Maddox was a student at McNair Middle School.  A DeKalb County Schools spokesperson said the district sent a "crisis support team" of school counselors, psychologists and social workers to the campus Thursday to help staff and students cope with the news of his death.

Investigators do not have a motive for the crime.

Before being transported to the hospital, Sellers gave police a partial description of the vehicle involved.  He told officers it was a white car, possibly an older model Pontiac with a handicapped sticker. The vehicle sped away after the shooting, according to police.
