Four generations of a DeKalb County family are still terrified after they said a gunman invaded their home on Derbyshire Drive. The family is too scared to show their faces, but they told FOX 5 the gunman threatened to shoot everybody in the house, including a baby.

"He told my granddaughter he's going to kill the baby if they don't give him the money," Sarah Casteneda said.

That's when 51-year-old Hugo Garcia surprised the intruder and emerged from the back of the house.

"I grabbed him by his neck," Garcia said.

Garcia, his nephew and the gunman started tussling over the weapon. Police said the gun discharged.

"He was trying to shoot somebody, and he shot himself,” Garcia said.

Garcia’s 18-year-old niece called 911 as she and her 17-year-old sister tried to hide. Police arrived and the suspect was rushed to the hospital, but he didn't make it. Now this family from El Salvador is having a hard time living with the deadly encounter.

"I know he came to the house to try to kill my family, but I say I am sorry from my heart because I know my son and I know he didn't want to do this,” Casteneda said.
