Dacula boy competes in Wheelchair Division of Peachtree Road Race

ATLANTA - Every Fourth of July the Peachtree Road Race kicks off with the Wheelchair Division, which is sponsored by Atlanta’s Shepherd Center.

Sixty-two athletes competed in this year’s race, which started just after 6:40 a.m. Monday morning.

The racers come from six countries, including Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, Columbia, Spain and the United States. According to the Shepherd Center, it takes racers, on average, about 2,500 pushes to complete the 6.2 miles of the Peachtree race.

Monday morning, before the race began, FOX 5 caught up with Collin Lancaster, who was the youngest athlete in the Wheelchair Division. The 12-year-old Dacula boy said he was very excited.  

“It’s awesome,” Collin said. “I just wanted to have fun at this race.”

Collin said this was his first time competing in the Peachtree Road Race.

This is the 35thyear of the Wheelchair Division being part of the Atlanta race.
