Controversial speaker draws protest, new chalkings at Emory

ATLANTA - It was a heated debated on the campus of Emory University on Wednesday evening as students have once again whipped out their chalk. This time it was to protest a controversial speaker, Milo Yiannopoulos, visiting the campus.

“We believe these chalkings are misplaced because we're trying to encourage the values of free speech,” said organizer Adam Woodward.

A tech writer for the conservative news website Breitbart, Yiannopoulos is known for making outlandish and inflammatory comments. He said after hearing Emory students say they were upset and intimidated when someone wrote “Trump 2016” in chalk on campus sidewalks and buildings earlier this year, he just had to have a talk with them.

“[I’m] going to give a nice light hearted talk about how oversensitive students are these days,” said Yiannopoloulos.

Milo, who refers to Donald Trump as "Daddy" said no topics are off-limits when it comes to free speech and we shouldn't cave in to what he calls oversensitive students.

“We're in a culture now where students use words like ‘trauma’ and ‘triggering’ and ‘personal safety’. These are not words that are applicable to differences in political opinion,” said Yiannopoloulos.

While some said he is inspirational, other said he incites hatred.

“I don't support his messages and his hateful ideologies and that's not what we're about on campus,” said student Lee Patten.
