Israel declared war on Hamas on Oct. 8, 2023, the first time since the Yom Kippur War. The Palestinian Islamic Hamas movement’s surprise attack on Oct. 7, a Jewish holiday, launched rockets from the Gaza Strip and sent fighters across the border. Hamas said allies like Iran and Lebanese Hezbollah “will join the battle if Gaza is subjected to a war of annihilation.”
