Police: Man shot near daycare center in DeKalb County

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - Police are investigating a shooting near a daycare center in DeKalb County Wednesday morning.

According to police, two people were inside a white vehicle on Woods Drive near Columbia Drive around 8 a.m. when a black car pulled up behind them. A person got out of the black vehicle and fired a shot into the white car, hitting the passenger, police said.

"One of the occupants in the black vehicle got out and was speaking to the occupants in the white vehicle, fired one shot into the vehicle, the white vehicle," said Shiera Campbell, DeKalb County Police.

The passenger, an adult male, was struck in the arm.

Initially, police said the wounded man went across the street to the Candy Cane Learning Center, a daycare facility, for help. But a daycare official told FOX 5’s Deidra Dukes the man never came onto their property.

"Candy Cane kids and the staff was safe," said Toshia Fanning, Assistant Director of the daycare.

The assistant daycare director said she locked the doors of the daycare when she heard the gunshot. Fanning spent the morning reassuring concerned parents their children were safe as word spread of the early morning shooting across the street from the DeKalb County daycare. The violence unfolded beyond the center's white picket fence.

"We heard gunshots and the first thing I did was lock the door. Lockdown," said Fanning.

Some children were already onsite; others being dropped off. Fanning stressed neither the shooter or victim came on the property. The daycare and nearby Columbia High School went on lockdown as a precaution as DeKalb County Police responded to the crime scene.

"I'm very glad that the children went under lockdown, that the children are OK," said resident Martha Snelling.

According to police, both the black vehicle and white vehicle drove away from the scene. 

Police are trying to figure out what led up to the shooting.
