The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a man and woman pretending to be Griffin Water Department employees.

The Sheriff's Office told FOX 5 News a man and woman knocked on the doors of at least two elderly women last week. According to the police report, at one home on Griffin Park Road the pair told the elderly woman they were employees of the Griffin Water Department.

The woman, who is in her 80s, let them into her home after they told her they were there to check for water leaks or a loss of water pressure. At one point, investigators said the duo stole some jewelry and cash from the woman.

Brent Mathis, the woman's neighbor said the elderly woman told her the pair offered her $100 if they found problems with the water system.

Brian Miller, with the city of Griffin, showed FOX 5 News the city's water department trucks. The sheriff's office said the imposters arrived in a silver station wagon at one victim's home and a green truck at another potential victim’s home on Rehoboth Road.

Miller said water department employees wear uniforms, have ID badges and drive clearly marked blue trucks. He said they would not knock on a door to check for water pressure or a water leak.

Charlie Brown, the stepson of an elderly woman who lives on Rehoboth Road, said she inadvertently let the pushy woman in, believing a family member was at the door.

Brown said the man stayed outside. His stepmother told him they both left after a short visit. Uneasy about the whole thing he called authorities.

Investigators said they are unsure if there are other victims. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Spalding County Sheriff's Office.
