A firefighter is recovering early Friday morning after being hurt while battling a house fire in northwest Atlanta.

It happened at an abandoned home on Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard at Mayson Turner Road.

Officials told FOX 5's Marissa Mitchell multiple units responded to the scene to get the fire under control. On the top floor of the home, a firefighter was working to put out flames when the floor beneath him gave way, and he fell eight to 10 feet below.

Thankfully, firefighters on the bottom floor were able to help him. He was treated at the scene and is expected to be okay.

"We began to handle it as a firefighter down, but they quickly got him out," said Battalion Chief Dwayne Johnson with Atlanta Fire. "All units operated exactly the way they were trained."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
