Fake cop using black Dodge Charger in North Georgia, according to sheriff's office

Authorities are warning residents in several North Georgia counties to be on alert after reports of an individual impersonating a law enforcement officer and pulling over drivers.

What we know:

According to the Towns County Sheriff’s Office, the fake cop has been seen in Cherokee County, North Carolina, Towns County, and Union County. The individual is described as a white male, small in stature with brown hair, wearing a gray and dark blue uniform. He was spotted with a vest carrying a radio and handcuffs.

The man is reportedly using a black Dodge Charger with tinted windows, a single emergency light, and a tinted tag cover to conceal the vehicle’s license plate.

The Towns County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that their patrol vehicles are clearly marked and their uniformed deputies wear distinct black uniforms with identifiable patches. Non-uniformed officers carry clearly visible badges and, while they occasionally conduct traffic stops, such incidents are rare.

What they're saying:

"Citizen safety is our top priority," the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. "We are taking these reports as a personal attack on your safety and on the law enforcement community that protects the roads we travel every day."

What you can do:

Authorities are urging residents who feel unsure or unsafe during a traffic stop to call 911 immediately. Dispatchers will provide guidance and confirm whether the officer in question is legitimate.

Anyone with information about the impersonator is encouraged to contact local law enforcement immediately.
