Woman killed in Atlanta Beltline stabbing identified

The woman stabbed to death on the Beltline has been identified as 23-year-old Alyssa Paige, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner.

The backstory:

Paige was killed by a 21-year-old man Thursday afternoon while she was on the Beltline. Officials confirmed to FOX 5 that the stabbing happened near the 1700 block of Flagler Avenue NE.

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said the department was alerted around 12:10 p.m. that a woman had been stabbed just north of the Montgomery Ferry Drive overpass. She was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital where she later died.

According to officers, the man responsible attacked a U.S. Postal worker prior to the stabbing before getting away on a bike. He then used that bike to flee the scene of the stabbing as well.

The suspect was arrested near St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Peachtree Street in Midtown around 5:25 p.m.

What we know:

Atlanta police say suspect Jahmare Brown was responsible for stabbing Alyssa Paige. Two Atlanta police officers spotted his bike on Peachtree Street and quickly arrested him without incident.

Brown waived his scheduled first court appearance at the Fulton County jail. The 21-year-old had been arrested several times before and faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony.

What they're saying:

Paige's grandparents in LaGrange described her Friday afternoon as a sweet young lady who was trying to find her way in life. The family said they are not yet ready to talk on camera about their tragedy.

City leaders say they are praying for Paige’s family and are relieved by the quick arrest. Mayor Andre Dickens and Police Chief Darin Schierbaum addressed the daytime attack and how surveillance cameras and observant officers led to the arrest.

What we don't know:

Atlanta police say Brown was likely having a mental episode during the violence. Investigators have not released a motive or explained what exactly triggered the series of attacks.

Authorities have not detailed why Brown attacked a postal employee with a rock or how he encountered the second stabbing victim on the Beltline. Both of those victims are expected to recover.
