School board denies Alabama charter school request
ATHENS, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama school system has denied a nonprofit's application for a start-up public charter school.
The Decatur Daily reports (http://bit.ly/2qiWbvW ) the Athens school board voted 3-2 Thursday to approve the application of Teens Path to Success, a proposed statewide school to educate county jail inmates aged 14 to 21. However, the resolution needed four votes to pass.
Athens education board chairman Russell Johnson voted against the measure, saying management of a statewide charter school would be best handled at the state level.
State lawmakers passed legislation in 2015 allowing charter schools, and placing authorizing power in local school systems or a state commission. Athens is one of four Alabama school systems with authorizing power.
Teens Path to Success can appeal to the Alabama Public Charter School Commission after 60 days.
