Police investigate deadly carjacking in Atlanta

ATLANTA - A carjacking in southeast Atlanta ended with one man dead and a suspect on the run. Officers found the victim's bullet-riddled car hours later.

Myiona Connally said she heard 40 to 50 shots fired the night of August 28 on Phillips Drive in southeast Atlanta. When the hail of gunfire came to an end, her neighbor, Arthur Curtley, 49, was dead. Atlanta police said he was the victim of carjackers who abandoned his vehicles two miles away.

“He didn't rob. He didn't kill. He didn't steal. He wasn't that kind of man. He was one of the nice guys out here. I'm tired this. I'm tired of going to funerals for innocent people,” Connally said.

Atlanta Police said Curtley was driving a black sedan around 8:30 p.m. when he was ambushed and shot. Investigators say he had just dropped off a male passenger on Phillips Drive when two men emerged from a different vehicle.

“That passenger has been cooperative, but couldn't give us much about the suspects and that's why we need to hear from the public. Even anonymously--we need tips,” said Lt. Charles Hampton.

Connally said she is afraid no one will come forward because of fear of retaliation.

“It's just wrong. It's just so wrong. He had a good spirit and positive vibes. He didn't deserve this,” said Connally.

Police suspect he was not a random target, but still do not know why the carjackers attacked.
