Police: Bullets hit school bus, vehicle in east Charlotte shooting

CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to reports of a shooting Thursday morning where one of the rounds struck a school bus window.

The shooting happened just before 8:00 a.m. near Parkwood and The Plaza in east Charlotte, police said. 

"Complete shock. Fear. Fear for my safety and everyone else's safety,” Jennifer McGettigan said while out on a morning run. “It's terrifying especially because it's a high traffic road and there are so many cars and people out at that hour.”

Early information indicates two people were shooting at each other when one of those rounds hit a school bus, belonging to Charlotte Lab School. 19 students were on board. Police said the school bus was not the target. 

Another round struck a second vehicle and damaged the car, but the driver was not injured, police said. 

“I'm thinking of my friends who have kids and what would happen if something would happen to one of them. It's just awful,” McGettigan said. 

“Senseless. Without regard to anyone around them,” Greg Byrum said. 

Byrum owns a nearby business. His granddaughter also goes to school nearby. “It's very random. The community is improving in this area. And it could happen anywhere,” he said. 

Police said no injuries have been reported. 

CMPD said the shooters fled the scene in separate vehicles. 

Police believe the two men got into a fight in a gas station parking lot. which led to the shooting. Detectives are still working to identify the two suspects using surveillance footage from the gas station.
