What we don't know:
Officials have released limited details, and the sheriff’s office has not yet identified the officer or the inmate.

It’s unclear how the inmate obtained the weapon or whether security protocols were followed.

The incident comes while the court-appointed federal monitor is in town with her team under a consent decree intended to improve jail conditions, county leaders said.
It follows an inmate-on-inmate attack that left 20-year-old Tyrianna Ledbetter on life support at Grady. Jail officials charged her cellmate, Shania White, with aggravated assault, aggravated battery and tampering with evidence. Families of both inmates say their loved ones were mentally ill and should not have been housed together.
