Former Gwinnett County Police officer sentenced in fatal accident

A former Gwinnett County police officer who hit and killed a teenager last year is heading to jail.

Scott York pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, speeding, and failure to maintain lane.

Investigators say York was on his way to a call driving 97 miles an hour down Singleton Road when he hit 16-year-old Jose Coreas-Mejia and his 18-year-old cousin. That was in January 2017.

Coreas-Mejia died from his injuries.

York was fired from the Gwinnett County Police Department after the accident.

The judge sentenced York to 180 days in jail and then nearly five years on probation.
