Winter Weather Advisory: What is known and unknown

Image 1 of 6

Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for parts of North Georgia and metro Atlanta starting on Tuesday morning, but there are still a lot of questions regarding what the fast-moving Arctic cold front means to the area.

FOX 5 Storm Team Chief Meteorologist David Chandley takes a look at some of the things that are known about the winter weather blast and what remains yet to be determined:

What I know:

  • A strong arctic front is heading our way. The front will usher in the very cold air that will wring out all available moisture in the form of snow. That has prompted a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of North Georgia. The biggest concern: light snowfall freezing on area roads.

  • I expect snow to fall late Tuesday afternoon in Northwest Georgia first, then in the metro area by evening. While everyone will NOT see some snow, we will ALL go into the deep freeze by Wednesday morning.
  • The wind chill will go BELOW ZERO in some spots Wednesday morning.
  • Wednesday will be sunny, but very cold with temps struggling to rise above freezing.
  • The FOX 5 Storm Team will do our best to forecast the timing and impacts of the winter weather.

What I don't know:

  • Which area roads will be snow covered and at what time they will become slick and what time they will become safe to travel. Check with your local DOT, follow the @SKYFOXTraffic on Twitter, and check the FOX 5 Atlanta traffic page.
  • Which area schools will close, or should close and when. FOX 5 Atlanta will have the school closing lists on their CLOSINGS PAGE and alerts on the FOX 5 Atlanta app.
  • The exact time the snow will start and end in your neighborhood. Each winter event time frame is different and as I have always said, when it comes to snowfall in Georgia, some will be excited, others will be disappointed. But you can check the latest radar on the FOX 5 Storm Team Page or download the FOX 5 Storm Team app.
