Severe storm threat continues to decrease across north Georgia

ATLANTA (FOX 5 Atlanta) - The FOX 5 Storm Team is tracking the potential for severe weather on Thursday afternoon and evening, with a large number of Georgia counties placed under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 10 p.m.

At 1:48 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect until 10 p.m. for the counties of Greene, Hart, Jasper, Putnam, and Upson.

By 4:30 p.m., the Weather Service dropped the watch in a number of counties in the Atlanta area including Banks, Barrow, Carroll, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Heard, Jackson and Troup, as well as Randolph County, Alabama.

By 5:00 p.m. The Weather Service dropped the watch in a number of counties including Butts, Madison, Rockdale, Walton, Clarke, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Morgan, Newton, Henry, Meriwether, Pike, Lamar, and Spalding Counties. 

The first round of severe weather that blasted extreme north Georgia Thursday morning did cause some wind damage. A FOX 5 viewer shared pictures of a home that suffered heavy damage when a tree fell on it on Park Boulevard in Rome, GA.

Now, the focus is on the next round of storms that has a great risk of producing severe storms across multiple north Georgia counties including metro Atlanta. 

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has placed eastern Georgia in a "Level 3" or enhanced risk for severe weather on Thursday.

North Central Georgia, including metro Atlanta, has been placed in a Level 2 or "Slight Risk."

Main threats expected are damaging winds and large hail, although a brief tornado cannot be ruled out.

The severe weather threat continues to decrease across the area with the storms moving out of our area for tonight.
