Vigil planned after 2 killed, 4 wounded in UNC Charlotte shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - A shooting that killed two and wounded four at a North Carolina university left students scrambling for shelter and prompted fresh calls for ways to keep campuses safe.

A vigil was planned for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Halton Arena on the campus of UNC Charlotte, where the shooting on Tuesday upended the last day of class. The governor vowed to take a hard look at what happened in order to prevent future shootings.

Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, told reporters that students should not have to fear for their lives on campus. He added: "In the coming days we will take a hard look at all of this to see what we need to do going forward."

The deadly shooting happened about 5:40 p.m., according to university officials. UNCC Niner Alerts tweeted that gunshots were reported near Kennedy Hall, an administrative building on campus.

UNC Charlotte Chief of Police Jeff Baker said a suspect armed with a pistol entered the building and opened fire. Officers arrived within two to three minutes, entered the building and were able to subdue the shooter. Two people were killed and four others were injured. Identities have not yet been released.

The accused gunman, 22-year-old Trystan A. Terrell, was taken into custody. Video showed Terrell being led away in handcuffs shortly after police arrived on campus.

Terrell has been charged with two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm on educational property, and discharging a firearm on educational property. 

The FBI was assisting CMPD and other law enforcement partners at UNC Charlotte in the aftermath of the on-campus shooting. The shooting remained under investigation.
