Victim's family speaks out after man arrested for wife's stabbing death

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. - Opal Christian Burton was 47 years old when, according to Clayton County Police, she was brutally murdered inside her Forest Park home by her own husband.

Crime scene investigators said Jermaine Jones stabbed his wife several times and nearly severed her head the night of September 26. Her sister, who spoke exclusively to FOX 5's Portia Bruner. She said the couple met at her wedding back home in Jamaica in 2012.

"We were all close. We all had a bond. I just can't understand how he could do this to her," said Kaydeen Burton.

Clayton County Police said Jones left the couple’s home on Springview Drive, then called 911 to report the brutal crime. Burton told Bruner he also called her, her mother and other relatives.

"He told my mother, 'You're not going to love me anymore after I tell you this.' And he told me, 'You're never going to see your sister again,'" Burton said.

The victim's sister said there was a history of domestic violence that Mrs. Jones hid from her from her older children, nieces, and nephews.

"Don't be afraid to reach out for help. Speak to somebody. Tell somebody and get help so that you don't have to go through this. I want people to believe me when I say, you don't want it to end like this. This is what can happen if you don't reach out," said the victim sister.

Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill has stated he will ask the Clayton County District Attorney to seek the death penalty against the 30-year-old who moved to Georgia after marrying the victim in 2013.
