Train derails in Barrow County, spills limestone
BARROW COUNTY, Ga. - A train derailed in Barrow County early Monday morning, and authorities said train crossings and roadways could be closed for between five and ten hours as a result.
In a statement, CSX said the train was headed from Atlanta to Greenwood, SC at the time of the derailment just after midnight. Three cars came off the tracks, according to the company. One of the cars spilled limestone onto the ground.
The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office reported that the train derailed at the intersection of Atlanta Highway and Bowman Mill Road. There were no injuries and no spills involving hazardous materials, according to CSX.
The railroad crossings at Bowman Mill and Cash Roads will be blocked for an extended amount of time until CSX can get the cars back on track, according to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office added that Atlanta Highway from Hardigree Road to Jackson Trail in both directions will be closed by the Georgia Department of Transportation and traffic will be rerouted during the cleanup effort.
The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office advised drivers to avoid the area if possible, because of heavy delays expected throughout the day.
