Sleeping 12-year-old shot in the face during drive-by shooting

At 12 years old, Victoria Delgadillo has suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung and a bullet hole in her cheek. She will have a bullet inside of her for the rest of her life.

Dallas police say she was shot while she slept inside her home Sunday morning. They still do not have a suspect or a motive.

The father of the 12-year-old girl says his daughter will be ok but will have a long recovery ahead. Meanwhile, those who live on his street are nervous to go outside.

Mercedes Rodriguez heard the gunshots just after 1 a.m. Sunday. Moments later, her neighbors in the 3200 block of Conroe Street were yelling for help.

“It sounded like it banged on my AC, and I jumped up,” Rodriguez recalled.

Someone fired two shots as they drove by a house. One of the bullets went inside the house, ricocheted off something and hit Victoria Delgadillo in the face as she was in her bunk bed falling asleep.

"I hear my dad ringing the doorbell like crazy asking me if I'm okay,” Rodriguez said. “And I said, ‘I'm fine. What happened?’ He said they shot the little girl next door.”

Victoria’s father, Sergio Delgadillo, spoke to FOX 4 off camera. He said the bullet entered his daughter's cheek, went down her esophagus, broke three ribs and punctured her lung. He says his daughter's health is improving, but they can't remove the bullet because it's too close to her heart.

"It could have been me or my son,” Rodriguez said. “And then next door I have my uncles and my little nephews and my nieces. It could have been one of them."

Sergio says he doesn't know who would have targeted his family's house, which sits right across the street from Lorenzo Dezavala Elementary School. He's just thankful his daughter survived.

Neighbors want an arrest soon and extra patrols in their community.

"It happens all the time every weekend,” Rodriguez said. “Nothing they can do about it. The only thing we can do is hide and just pray they don't hit us."
