Residents in the South Metro rallied to support close to 80 senior citizens who evacuated from a residential facility near Charleston.

Around 60 residents from the Mount Pleasant Somerby Senior Living facility were taken to the Wingate Hotel in Fairburn, and the rest to a Somerby senior living center in Peachtree City.

One man drove from Atlanta to meet his 97-year-old mother and take her to his home, once he got word she would arrive.

"I'm very happy she made it here. The question is, when is she going to return? We don't know," said George Arkedis.

Staff told FOX 5 News, they made sure every resident had their required medicine, oxygen tanks, wheelchair, and walking devices as they evacuated their facility.

City officials from Fairburn and South Fulton greeted the seniors, providing food and supplies with help from local businesses. Fairburn Police offered to give rides to residents for groceries, medicine, and church attendance.

Staff said the public can stop by and bring snacks, or keep the seniors company by bringing board games.
