Police warn of scammers targeting elderly
CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. - Forest Park Police are warning the community to watch out for two scammers claiming to sell floors, but police say they are not actually salesmen.
According to investigators, their plan is to distract you and then steal from you. Police tell FOX 5 that they believe these men are preying on the elderly, and that they want to get them caught before this happens to someone else.
Police say two men posing as salesmen conned their way into a home on Grace Drive on May 17.
"The entered the home under the ruse that they wanted to talk about floor options. They sat out for a while, talked to them, continued to tell them they weren't interested," said Sgt. Kelly Flannigan.
The officer says one of the men got pushy, and the home owners asked the man to leave for a final time. Before he left the residence, he asked for a banana, and a glass of water.
They gave him the items that he asked for. Later on, the people at the home realized their checkbook with blank checks in it had been stolen.
One of the scammers told the people at home his name was Bobby Thompson, though police do not believe that was the man's real name.
If you have been the victim of this scam, please give the police a call. If you have any information about these men, you are asked to call police as well.
