Police Respond to another Dog Incident at Newnan PetSmart

NEWNAN, GA - Police were called once again to a Newnan PetSmart where last September a customer stabbed a Pit Bull during a dog attack.  According to a police report, officers responded Saturday to what they described as a dog fight between a Pit Bull and a Great Dane.  However, the Great Dane’s owner said it was the Pit Bull who was the aggressor.

Mitch Philpott, 66, of Newnan, said he had headed down an aisle where the Pit Bull and its owner had been looking at merchandise.  Philpott said he asked the owner if her dog was okay and proceeded to pass her and the dog.  He said the Pitt Bull grabbed his Great Dane by the head and ear and bit him several times.

In a police report FOX 5 obtained, the Pitt Bull owner, Suzanne Peterson, told officers that she gave Philpott a verbal warning that she was not sure how her dog would respond to his dog and to stay away please.  The report quotes her as saying that Philpott continued anyway and said, “it’s okay, their tails are wagging.”  Philpott told Fox Five he never said that to the woman.

Philpott said his Great Dane Harley sustained bites to his head and ears and in a second incident with the Peterson’s dog that he was bitten on the hand and leg while trying to separate the two animals.

PetsMart in a statement to FOX 5 said, “It’s our understanding that neither of the pets where seriously injured.”  The company said it was working with Philpott to ensure that he and pet both make a speedy recovery.

It was September 2014 at that Newnan Petsmart, a customer stabbed a Pitt Bull at an adoption event at the store.   A vet was forced to euthanize Clara because of her injuries.  The customer who stabbed Clara told police the Pitt Bull attacked his terrier mix and he was forced to use a weapon to end the assault.  A Coweta County Grand Jury declined to indict the man.

Newnan Police said no charges will be filed since both dogs were leashed at the time and there was no criminal intent.
