Police: More rapes start as casual social media connection

Don't let your guard down while looking for love on a social media page. That’s what police are warnings as they investigate more rapes with ties to online connections.

A young woman may have communicated for weeks, even months online, but the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office said she may then feel comfortable for an in-person date.

But the person who shows up may have been lying about his background. Instead of leaving the location immediately, the date will proceed often with bad consequences. More and more rapes are occurring this way.

Prosecutors and counselors offer some advice. They say you should go in your own vehicle on the first couple of dates and bring someone with you. Even before that, do as much research as you can on the person you are interested in.

For example, see if that gentleman really works for the company he claims employment. Plus, there are several databases where his true background information can be found.
