Police: Driver kills woman who stopped to help at accident

DULUTH, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - Gwinnett County Police have arrested a Grayson man after they say he hit a Good Samaritan who had stopped to check on the driver involved in an accident on Interstate 85.

According to investigators, 64-year-old Lawrenceville resident Elvester Sykes got into a single vehicle accident a little before 1 a.m. on Sunday on I-85 Northbound.

Authorities say 20-year-old Kayli Guthrie saw the accident, stopped her car by the side of the road, and got out make sure Sykes was OK.

At the same time, 27-year-old Jonathan Gresham was approaching the accident in the lefthand lane. Police say he tried to brake but wasn't able to stop himself in time. His Ford Fusion hit the back of the car in the the earlier accident and kept going – hitting Guthrie.

Guthrie died on the scene from the accident, while police say Gresham kept going for another half a mile before stopping to call 911.

He's now charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, failure to drive within a single lane, and driving under the influence – less safe.

Sykes was transported to a local hospital to be treated and has also been charged with driving under the influence – less safe.

The investigation is ongoing.
