Woman dies in Puerto Rico zipline accident
An Atlanta family is searching for answers and working to bring their daughter home after 40-year-old Tamara Dicks died in a tragic ziplining accident in Puerto Rico.
MARIETTA, Ga. - A Marietta family is working to bring their daughter home to Georgia following a fatal zip-lining accident in Puerto Rico over the weekend.
Tamirah Dix, 40, died while on vacation with her boyfriend. Her brother, Shadi Dix, said the family is hoping to have her returned home by Friday to begin funeral arrangements.
What we know:
The incident occurred during an excursion in Puerto Rico where Tamirah Dix reportedly suffered a head injury. The exact circumstances of the impact remain unclear to the family.
Dix was described by her family as an active traveler who loved an adventure. The family has established a GoFundMe account to help with bringing her back to Georgia, and arranging her funeral.
What they're saying:
Shadi Dix said he feels lost without his older sister, who he remembers as a foundational figure in his life.
"To know her is to love her," Dix said. "She made sure I was up in the morning, made sure I got off the bus, made sure I ate. She was a good big sister."
He described her as being full of love and showing that love to everyone.
Her niece, Ryleigh, shared similar sentiments regarding their relationship.
"She was the best auntie I could ever have. I never dreamed of having an auntie that can give me everything," she said.
Regarding the accident, Shadi Dix said his sister was healthy and that her recent travels were not a concern.
"So healthy, traveling lots, traveling wasn’t a factor it’s a tragic accident. I don’t have answers to yet," he said. He noted that the reports they received indicated she was "ziplining, they say she hit her head somewhere."
However, he remains frustrated by the lack of specific information regarding the timeline of the injury.
"It's unclear how or when was it up, on the zip line was it walking to the zip line a whole lot of questions I don’t know," Dix said.
The tragedy was unexpected to the family. Chadi said he wishes he could have 1 more adventure with his big sister.
"We were probably planning on going skydiving one day, so this is the least of our extreme activities. We have done something so simple," Dix said. "She's very special, very special and loved," he added.
