Man critical after Paulding County home shooting

A man remained in critical condition Friday afternoon following a shooting early morning at a home in Paulding County.

What we know:

The Paulding County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene near the intersection of Wallace Way and Cody Cove around 6 a.m. on Friday. Deputies arrived to find the victim suffering from gunshot wounds inside his residence. Investigators stated that several other individuals were inside the home at the time of the shooting, but no other injuries were reported.

Detectives are currently working to determine the circumstances of the entry, noting it is unclear whether the suspects forced their way into the home or were permitted inside.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that a group of people arrived at the residence, shot the man, and fled the scene. Criminal investigation detectives remained on the scene throughout the morning canvassing the area for evidence and interviewing neighbors. Officials are also reviewing Ring doorbell footage from nearby homes to piece together the timeline of events.

At this time, authorities have not released a description of the suspect or suspects involved. While the shooter remains at large, the sheriff’s office stated there is no immediate threat to the broader community. The investigation is ongoing.

What they're saying:

The incident has left the quiet neighborhood in a state of shock. One neighbor, who asked to remain unidentified, recalled being woken up by the violence.

"I heard it this morning, about 6:20, a bunch of gunshots and a bunch of banging," the neighbor said. "It’s quiet, families, kids. I mean it's quiet, it's boring but this is sad. Not how anyone wants to start their Friday morning on Good Friday for sure."

Stephanie Long, a neighbor who knows the victim, expressed her disbelief regarding the violence.

"I came out and my whole road covered police and crime tape," Long said. "I was freaked out. My son said something happened to our neighbors and then I come out and my son's school bus driver called saying they couldn't come down because of police activity."

Long described the victim as "an amazing kid, a sweetheart," adding that she never expected such an event to occur in their community.

"I want them to catch if one or more than one, whoever, to catch because that’s not right to go into someone’s home," Long said. "That’s their home and peace."

What we don't know:

Police have yet to release names or physical descriptions of those involved.

It remains unclear if the group forced entry or was permitted inside.

The specific circumstances triggering the early morning gunfire are still under investigation.
