Major marijuana bust in Troup County
TROUP COUNTY, Ga. - The Troup County Sheriff's Office found around 151 pounds of what police are calling high-grade marijuana during a traffic stop.
At approximately 8:43 p.m. on November 2, Sergeant Nathan Taylor of the Troup County Sheriff's Office stopped a Freightliner tractor that was pulling a trailer on I-85.
The tractor was traveling northbound and was stopped near mile marker 23. Police say the tractor was pulled over after the driver passed a mandatory weigh station and failing to maintain his lane of traffic.
A subsequent investigation led to the drugs being found in the trailer. The driver, Amaury Izquierdo Mansito, and the passenger, Marco Alfaro, were arrested and charged with trafficking marijuana.
The driver, Mansito, was also charged with failure to maintain lane, failure to obey a traffic control device, and driving with an expired driver's license.
According to police, the marijuana's street value is believed to be around 1.6 million dollars.
Since such a large amount of drugs were found, the Troup County Sheriff's Office was assisted by investigators with Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigators and Georgia Motor Carrier Compliance Division.
