Israel arrests Palestinians over fatal shooting of hiker

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military says it has arrested a Palestinian man it alleges is behind the shooting death of an Israeli hiker in the West Bank last month.

The military said Wednesday it apprehended the alleged shooter, Mohammed Abu Shaheen, and four of his alleged accomplices in the attack near a West Bank settlement that killed one man and wounded another. It said the men all confessed.

The Israeli internal security agency Shin Bet says Abu Shaheen is a former commando in a Palestinian Authority special forces unit. Another suspect was a member of a Palestinian intelligence unit.

Palestinian security forces spokesman Adnan Damiri said he was not aware of the men's affiliations. He said the Palestinian Authority opposes such attacks, which he said are carried out "on a personal level."
