GRANTVILLE, Ga. - A Georgia state trooper shot and killed a 26-year-old man during a traffic stop over the weekend. The incident is now under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
What we know:
Cameron David James, 26, was stopped by a state trooper on I-85 at around 8:40 p.m. on Jan. 18.
James was removed from the Nissan Altima he was driving to be arrested.
At some point, the trooper shot James, who then got back into the car and attempted to drive off. He crashed on the side of the road instead.
James was pronounced dead at the scene.
No troopers were injured.
The other side:
The state trooper said James resisted arrest during the traffic stop, which led to him being tased.
The trooper said the Taser was ineffective, and that James reached into the Altima to grab a gun. That's when the trooper said he fired his weapon.
After being shot, the trooper said James got back into the car and drove southbound down I-85. He eventually crashed on the side of the road.
Responding troopers tried to administer first aid, but James was pronounced dead.
What we don't know:
It's not clear what offense James was originally stopped for. It's also not clear why he was being arrested.
The identity of the involved trooper has not been released.
