Georgia State Senator to Run for Congress

The whispers about who will seek to replace a Georgia congressman ended Wednesday.

State Senator Mike Crane, R - Newnan, announced he will run to fill Rep. Lynn Westmoreland's seat in the House of Representatives.  Westmoreland revealed earlier this month that he will not seek reelection, which set off a firestorm of speculation.

Crane put an end to the conjecture by including some of the other people whose names has been floated as potential Republican candidates in his official announcement--Sen. Marty Harbin, Sen. Josh McKoon and Rep. David Stover.

"What you weren't privy to was Josh and Marty and David and myself drawing straws and I drew the short straw," Crane joked.

All three men expressed their support of Crane's campaign.

"What matters is not that any particular one of us is elected to higher office," said McKoon.  "What matters is that we send a rock-solid conservative who will hold fast to the principles we hold dear."

Those principles, Crane said, include not participating in politics as usual.

"The people of the third district of Georgia and the people of Georgia have an opportunity to send a message to Washington and the message is we are tired of vending machine politics--you put in enough money, you pull enough levers, you get what you want.  That ends coming soon," he said.

Crane is the first candidate to announce his bid for the District 3 seat.
