Georgia narcotics squad ends over probe of officer drug use, informant sex
GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. (AP) - The police chief of Glynn County, Georgia, says the department's narcotics squad has been dissolved over allegations that one of its detectives was using drugs and having sex with confidential informants.
The News of Brunswick reports Police Chief John Powell announced Friday that the city and county squad will be replaced with a countywide criminal investigations unit.
County police officers told the department this year that Detective James Cassada was taking illegal drugs and sexually involved with two confidential informants.
The police chief says an internal investigation was launched in February and Cassada resigned shortly after.
He says the probe also found that Capt. David Hassler provided conflicting statements during the investigation and investigator John Simpson had an ongoing friendship with a convicted drug manufacturer.
