Funeral set for siblings killed in Jonesboro home invasion
JONESBORO, Ga. - A joint funeral will take place this week for a 15-year-old brother and his 11-year-old sister, believed to be innocent victims in a gang-related shooting.
Daveon and Tatiyana Coates were shot as they slept October 22 in their home near Jonesboro. Police said they received a 911 call around 5 a.m. from a home on Libby Lane.
A child in the home called authorities to report someone entered and fired shots. Four younger children were also in the home but were not harmed. No adults were in the house at the time of the home invasion.
Clayton County Police Chief Michael Register said the murders were gang-related, and a retaliatory move from a gang in the metro area. Investigators have learned the gang members were actually after another 15-year-old; police said the teen had moved into the victims' house from Tennessee with his mother and his siblings.
Police said that 15-year-old was not in the house at the time of the shooting, and fled the Atlanta area to Chattanooga after the ordeal. Investigators said the Atlanta-area gang members followed that teen up to Tennessee, and engaged in a shootout there.
A funeral for the siblings will be held on Wednesday at the Taylor Funeral Home in Chattanooga.
Clayton County police have vowed to find those responsible for the deaths, but no arrests had been made late Sunday. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
