Police ended a tense SWAT standoff in West Cobb Wednesday evening after a teenage girl barricaded herself inside a home with easy access to weapons.

The incident began when a mother called 911 following a dispute with her 17-year-old daughter at a house on Due West Road. When officers arrived, the teenager locked herself inside a bathroom. Cobb County Police Officer Aaron Wilson noted that authorities became concerned after seeing unlocked gun safes, weapons, and knives that were easily accessible to the teen. To resolve the situation, officers fired pepper balls into the home, which eventually led to the girl surrendering.

What they're saying:

Police emphasized that having mental health professionals working alongside law enforcement was vital for this outcome. "When we respond to these calls we have someone there that is a professional, can make that evaluation and get them the mental help they need," said Cobb County Police Officer Aaron Wilson. He added that while charges are penidng,  "Right now the main priority is her mental health so she is receiving treatment at a local hospital."

Cobb County’s PATH program, which pairs a clinician with a police officer in the same patrol car, was launched in 2019. The agency was among the first in the region to implement such a specialized mental health response unit. Since the program's inception, several other local law enforcement agencies have adopted similar models to handle mental health crises.

Teen faces felony charges following treatment

What's next:

Once the 17-year-old is released from the mental health facility, she will face legal consequences for the standoff. Authorities confirmed she will be charged with Felony Obstruction and Burglary, because she barricaded herself inside a vacant home.
