Augusta planning to bring back James Brown 'Birthday Bash'
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Papa's getting a brand new bash.
Organizers in Augusta plan to bring back the annual "Birthday Bash" celebration dedicated to the late soul singer James Brown.
The Augusta Chronicle reports organizer George Claussen is working with city officials and the James Brown Family Foundation on the event May 3, which would have been Brown's 83rd birthday. Claussen says members of Brown's band will reunite for the celebration.
The James Brown Birthday Bash was held for years at the Augusta arena that bears the singer's name. But the party ceased after a final farewell event in 2007, a few months after Brown died on Christmas Day 2006.
Claussen says the revived Birthday Bash will benefit a music education program founded by Brown's daughter, Deanna Brown Thomas.
