Snake encounters more likely with warmer weather
ATLANTA - Encounters with snakes are more likely now that the weather is warmer.
There are 46 species of snakes in Georgia, but only six are venomous.
Georgia Department of Natural Resources Senior Wildlife Biologist John Jensen says the only venomous snake you are likely to encounter in Metro Atlanta is the copperhead.
Watch out for them on trails or curled up by logs, and wear long sleeves, boots and gloves while hiking or gardening.
If you see a venomous snake, leave it alone. Most people get bitten because they try to move, catch or kill the snake.
Snakes play an important role in nature, and it is illegal to kill non-venomous native snakes.
