Local events commemorate National Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month

It's a genetic disease that affects 70,000 people worldwide -- and there's still no cure for cystic fibrosis.  But this month, events held around Metro Atlanta will raise money in hopes of changing that.

May is National Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month, and Choate Construction will mark the occasion with its 7th annual Cars & 'Q for the Cause event on Saturday, April 30 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.  The fundraising event is held at Choate's headquarters in Sandy Springs, and brings together more than 100 cars (classic, muscle, and exotic) and bikes and BBQ from Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q.  Raising money for the fight against CF has been part of the Choate mission for more than 20 years, when Choate President Millard Choate's daughter Emily’s best friend was diagnosed with CF as a toddler.

Meanwhile, the Georgia Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will hold its Great Strides walk on May 21, starting at the Georgia Tech IC Courtyard at 8 a.m.  The walk raises money to fund research, education, and care concerning CF.  In 2015, Atlanta's CF walk was the largest in the country, raising nearly $1.9 million.

Good Day Atlanta's Paul Milliken spent the morning previewing both events, and learning more about those living with cystic fibrosis.
