Alabama closes shellfish areas after recent rainfall

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Department of Public Health has closed shellfish growing waters in Baldwin and Mobile counties.

The department, in a news release, said Areas I, II, III, IV, V, VI and VII were closed effective Wednesday. Those areas include Cedar Point, Portersville Bay, Heron Bay, Dauphin Island Bay and Grand Bay.

State Health Officer, Dr. Thomas Miller, issued the order as a result of possible bacteriological contamination of oyster beds due to recent rainfall.

He says harvesting will resume once the areas meet "acceptable bacteriological criteria."
